Most Reverend Bishop John McCarthy Lecture Series
"The Life and Legacy of Pope John XXIII"
Charles E. Curran, STD, from Southern Methodist University, will discuss "The Life and Legacy of Pope John XXIII" as part of the Most Reverend Bishop John McCarthy Lecture Series. The lecture starts at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, in Jones Auditorium at the Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center.
He will discuss both the achievements of the Second Vatican Council led by Pope John XXIII and the Pope's openness to the call of the Spirit. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the event.
Curran was ordained in 1958 as a Roman Catholic priest of the Diocese of Rochester, NY. Curran is currently the Elizabeth Scurlock University Chair of Human Values at SMU. His teaching specialties and research interests span the following subjects: fundamental moral theology, social ethics, role of the Church as a moral and political actor in society, and Catholic moral theology.
He has many professional distinctions. Curran has served as president of three national academic societies: The Catholic Theological Society of America, Society of Christian Ethics and American Theological Society. He is also a member of the following editorial boards: Annual of the Society of Christian Ethics, The Ecumenist, Horizons, Journal of Religious Ethics and Theoforum. He was also the recipient of the John Courtney Murray Award of the Catholic Theological Society of America for distinguished achievement in theology.
The Bishop McCarthy Lecture Series is an academic dialogue that was created to honor Bishop McCarthy, who led the Diocese of Austin from 1985 to 2001.
