AUSTIN-St.
Edward's University will present its first Lifelong Learner Award
to Liz Carpenter, former press secretary and staff director for
Lady Bird Johnson. The award will be presented during the 25th anniversary
celebration of its innovative New College program on Friday, Oct.
27 in the Mabee Ballroom of the Ragsdale Center on campus.
At
age 80, Carpenter-a sixth generation Texan-is a political artifact,
an aging feminist, and author and lecturer. Carpenter has spent
her lifetime as a communicator, a reporter, author and popular speaker.
She is a veteran of the Washington scene, having survived politics
for more than 50 years as a Washington reporter, and as a participant
in President Johnson's administration.
Service
to adult students has been part of the mission of St. Edward's New
College since its inception. Almost 1,500 New College students have
graduated from the program in the last 25 years, and many are now
successful professionals in their field.
