AUSTIN
- Dr. Jorge A. Lopez, technical editor for "Universo,"
the Spanish version of the radio show "StarDate", will
conduct two lectures on Friday, October 6 on the St. Edward's University
campus.
The
first lecture, "Universo - The Aztec and Mayan Astronomy,"
will take place at 12 p.m. in the Mabee Ballroom A of the Ragsdale
Center. The second lecture, "The Search of Gravity Waves,"
will take place at 2 p.m. in Fleck Hall, room 101.
Lopez,
assistant dean of the College of Science at the University of Texas
at El Paso, has performed research in nuclear physics, gravitation,
materials, and physics education in collaborations with Berkeley
Lawrence Berkeley Lab., Universidad de Argentina, Universidad Autonoma
de Mexico, Laval Universitat Canada and other institutions. He has
been awarded 16 research and education grants from The National
Science Foundation, NASA, and others.
The
lectures are sponsored by the university's School of Natural Sciences
and Minorities in Physics, a program offered by the American Physical
Society. The APS has had a long-standing interest in improving the
climate in physics departments for underrepresented minorities and
sponsors site visit programs to increase the number of minorities
in physics.
