Vetter,
the DPS trooper who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic
stop near San Marcos, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor
of arts in criminal justice from St. Edward's University in May
1994. During his days as a St. Edward's University student, Vetter
served as both vice-president and president of the university's
chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice academic
society. His trustworthiness was further recognized by the university
administration when he was hired as a student worker in the Office
of Housing and in the Registrar's Office. Dr. David M. Horton, professor
and director of St. Edward's University Criminal Justice Program
who taught Vetter, described him as the "quintessential poster-boy
for what professional law enforcement in our democratic society
should stand for at the dawn of the new millennium."
Vetter
was a resident of New Braunfels and a graduate of Canyon High School.
St.
Edward's University is an independent Catholic liberal arts university
of 3,800 students in Austin. It was founded by the Congregation
of Holy Cross.
