As
thousands of Central Texas college students prepare to hit the books,
approximately 200 St. Edward's University freshmen also are preparing
to start hitting nails, painting walls, filing papers, sweeping
floors, moving furniture, making binders and other odd jobs. No,
we're not talking about moving into dorms or even part-time jobs,
but a unique service project that is putting some members of the
SEU freshman class to work for nearly 20 Austin-area non-profit
agencies.
As
an institution of higher education, the university's mission is
to teach. However, St. Edward's view of education extends beyond
the classroom and the borders of our campus, working to develop
each student's character, conscience, citizenship and social responsibility
regardless of their major. "This project is a perfect example of
our mission in action," said Nicole Guerrero, assistant dean of
students. "Even before the first day of classes has begun, these
students will already share a sense of unity and a feeling of accomplishment.
They'll also know what programs are available for future volunteer
opportunities."
We
invite members of the media to shadow individual groups of students
throughout the day, including joining us for the pre-event breakfast,
going on-site to local service agencies and the picnic lunch wrap
up session. No two stories will be the same, as each reporter/photographer
team will be assigned a different group and organization. lease
let us know ASAP if you plan to cover the event.
