AUSTIN St. Edwards University officials announced the
following changes to the Board of Trustees:
Appointments
Margaret Crahan is the Dorothy Epstein Professor of Latin
American History at Hunter College, City University of New York.
A former Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International
Studies professor, she has also served as director of the Human
Rights Project at the Woodstock Theological Center and has been
twice awarded a fellowship at the Woodrow Wilson International Center
for Scholars. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relation
and a former Henry R. Luce Professor of Religion, Power and Political
Process. Her major publications include Africa and the Caribbean,
Human Rights and Basic Needs in the Americas and The City and the
World: New Yorks Global Future. Crahan received her doctorate
from Columbia University.
Roger S. Kintzel is former Austin American-Statesman publisher
and current publisher of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is
chairman of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation and
president-elect of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association.
Active in the Atlanta civic community, Kintzel serves on the executive
committee of Central Atlanta Progress and the Metro Atlanta Chamber
of Commerce. Kintzel received his bachelors degree from Wright
State University in Dayton, Ohio, and his masters degree in
journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Victor Miramontes is president and chief operating officer for
American CityVista, a Cisneros Communities Venture that develops
urban residential communities. He has held senior executive positions
with Wells Fargo Bank, Laredo National Bank, Rotan Mosle, Inc.,
and LaQuinta Inn. He serves as vice chairman of the San Antonio
Water System and chairman of the Alamo Public Telecommunications
Council. He is also a member of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee
for the City of San Antonio Electric Utility. Miramontes received
his bachelors and masters degrees in economics from
Stanford University, as well as a law degree from the Stanford University
School of Law.
Jim Smith, certified public accountant and corporate financial
advisor, was named chair for a two-year term. Smith has been a member
of the St. Edwards board for 12 years. He is the former vice
president, treasurer and chief financial officer for Tracor. Smith
has received numerous honors in the field of accounting including
CPA of the Year and Outstanding CPA Texas Chapter President. He
is the capital campaign co-chair for the Capitol Area Council of
Girl Scouts and serves on the board of the Headliners Club
and the Festival Institute at Round Top. Smith received his bachelors
degree in accounting with honors from the University of Texas at
Austin.
Robert Weiss is vice president for administration at the
Meadows Foundation in Dallas, a $900 million foundation that makes
community-related investments and grants of more than $30 million
annually. He currently manages an investment in the Wilson Historic
District, a $60 million historic restoration district that includes
28 nonprofit tenant agencies. Weiss formulated and implemented Dallas
Public Schools educational reform effort and served on the
citys Commission for Educational Excellence. He is the former
executive director of the Jewish Community Center in Dallas and
the former national director of development for Bnai Brith
International in Washington, D.C.
Larry
Franklin
is chairman of the board of Harte-Hanks, Inc., a publicly traded
worldwide marketing company in the consumer and business-to-business
markets, located in San Antonio. Since starting at Harte-Hanks in
1971, he has held such executive positions as chief financial officer,
executive vice president and chairman and chief executive officer.
The former chairman of the Board of Regents of East Texas State
University, he has served on boards of the Baptist Foundation of
Texas and the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. Franklin
received his bachelors degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce
and his masters degree from Texas Tech University. He is a
distinguished alumnus of both universities.
Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross, St. Edwards University
is an independent Catholic liberal arts university of 4,100 students
in Austin.
