AUSTIN St. Edward's University College Assistance Migrant
Program (CAMP) student Brenda Cornejo (Eagle Pass), 05,
a social work major, is the sole recipient of the 2002 Migrant Farmworker
Baccalaureate Scholarship from the Geneseo Migrant Center in New
York. Brenda is the third St. Edwards student to receive the
award in the scholarships five-year history.
This national scholarship provides financial support to a deserving
student with a history of migrating for employment in agriculture
who has successfully completed one year of college. The support
will cover expenses beyond what the student is entitled to in federal,
state and other scholarship assistance up to $20,000. More than
50 students applied for this competitive national scholarship.
Established as a freshman-level scholarship program, CAMP is designed
to offer an educational opportunity to the sons and daughters of
migrant and seasonal farmworkers. Funded by the U.S. Department
of Education and St. Edwards University, CAMP has assisted
more than 2,000 students since 1972. In addition, the program delivers
support services to satisfy the educational and personal needs of
each participant. Forty students are chosen to participate in the
program each year. St. Edwards has the longest continuous
CAMP program in the nation.
St. Edwards University is an independent, Catholic liberal
arts university of 4,100 students in Austin. It was founded by the
Congregation of Holy Cross.
