Set
in the Caribbean, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND fills the stage with a delightful
Calypso beat! Island villagers comfort a little girl with the captivating
legend of the orphan Ti Moune. The story is of the love, commitment
and betrayal between this young peasant girl and the wealthy young
man, Daniel, whose life she saves. The myth is told of how the gods
of Love, Earth, Water, and Death initiate this meeting and send
Ti Moune on this journey testing the strength of love.
ONCE ON THIS ISLAND originated at Playwrights Horizons, which opened
at the Booth Theater on Broadway on October 18, 1990, playing for
469 performances. The show received eight Tony Award nominations.

St.
Edward's University alumnus Kevin Archambault returns to the
Mary Moody Northen Theatre as director and choreographer of ONCE
ON THIS ISLAND. Kevin's work in the community includes direction
and choreography for "Once Upon a Mattress" and "You're
a Good Man, Charlie Brown." He also has been featured in the
Austin Musical Theatre productions of "A Chorus Line,"
"Oklahoma," "Oliver," "Fiddler on the Roof"
and "West Side Story."
"ONCE ON THIS ISLAND" has the integrity of genuine fairy
tales in that it doesn't lead to a saccharine ending, but to a catharsis,
transcendent acceptance of the dust-to-dust continuity of life and
death." (Frank Rich, New York Times)
