AUSTIN—Spirit
teams from St. Edward’s University received top honors during
the 2002 University Cheerleading Association (UCA) Collegiate Summer
Camp in July, held at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
Spirit teams, comprised of cheerleaders, pom team and mascot; enhance
school spirit by performing regularly at SEU athletic events and
other campus activities. It is a year round organization that is
involved with the campus and the community.
During camp, ribbons were awarded in the following manner: blue
(superior), red (excellent) and white (good).
| Mascot:
St. Edward’s mascot, Denise Valporto de Sa (Houston),
’04, Topper, received two blue superior ribbons and
one red excellent ribbon for character walk, skit evaluation,
and use of props. In addition, the mascot received a fifth place
trophy for overall camp performance. Only five trophies were
awarded from 23 mascots. |

Cheerleaders received the following awards: |

superior ribbon for Fight song routine

superior ribbon for Cheer routine

place trophy for Division II cheer competition

| Pom
Squad: Pom Squad was awarded a superior trophy for performance
overall. In addition, each pom squad member was judged individually
with the combined ribbon awards determining their trophy placement.
Individual awards were given to Stephanie Bazan (Austin),
’02, one blue ribbon; Nicole Benson (Pearland),
’02, two blue ribbons; Vianka Berain (Del Rio),
’05, one blue ribbon; Jessica Estrada (Georgetown),
’03, two blue ribbons; Tiffany Muna (Smithville),
’05, two blue ribbons; and Juliet Wenzel (Austin),
’04, one blue and one red ribbon. |
