October
is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and to raise awareness and
money, the St. Edward's University community is holding a rally.
On Tuesday, Oct. 19, students, faculty and staff will donate their
pennies by placing them side by side, making a trail throughout
campus. The trail, which will represent the community’s wish
to stop domestic violence, will be left on the ground to grow all
week before the pennies are collected and given to SafePlace.
“Students,
faculty, staff and members of the community will join us for this
tribute to victims and survivors,” said Staff Psychologist
Marla Craig, PhD. “This is our chance to make a wish, lend
a hand and educate ourselves on the reality of domestic violence.”
SafePlace, a
nonprofit group that provides services for survivors of interpersonal
violence in the Austin community, works to end domestic and sexual
violence through crisis intervention, prevention, education, long-term
support and advocacy. In 2003, SafePlace provided 37,871 nights
of emergency shelter to 948 individuals.
