From
the 1979 hit movie Apocalypse Now to the Millennium Bug of 2000
and
even today’s popular Left Behind novels, the end of the world
has been the subject of many works of fiction, religious doctrine
and academic discussion. Now, an upcoming lecture at St. Edward’s
University is providing a new opportunity to discuss the meaning
of the apocalypse in modern times.
The School of Humanities presents a lecture on Monday, March 7 by
eminent biblical scholar John J. Collins, PhD, Holmes Professor
of Old Testament Criticism and Interpretation at Yale University,
on the legacy of apocalypticism and its impact on modern life.
A native of Ireland, Collins has published widely on the subjects
of apocalypticism, wisdom literature, Hellenistic Judaism and the
Hebrew Bible. His books include The Apocalyptic Imagination
and the Scepter and the Star: The Messiahs of the Dead Sea Scrolls
and Other Ancient Literature. Collins is co-editor of the three-volume
Encyclopedia of Apocalypticism and author of a much acclaimed commentary
on Daniel for the Hermeneia series. Most recently, he published
The Hebrew Bible: An Introduction. In addition, Collins
has served as editor of the Journal of Biblical Literature
and as president of both the Catholic Biblical Association and Society
of Biblical Literature.
