| On
Tuesday, Sept. 20, Mexican-American labor leader and social activist
Dolores Huerta will speak at St. Edward’s University. As co-founder
and first vice president of the United Farm Workers Union, Huerta
is the most prominent Chicana labor leader in the United States.
For more than 30 years, she has dedicated her life to the struggle
for justice and dignity for migrant farm workers. (Details on a
press conference with Huerta are forthcoming.)
Coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month, Huerta’s presentation
is part of a larger Freshman Studies curriculum. After reading The
Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers Movement,
freshmen will discuss and write about the issues raised. They will
supplement their knowledge with opportunities to view the play Cesar
& Ruben, directed on campus by Ed Begley Jr., and hear
Huerta speak. The freshman class includes 35 students chosen for
the St. Edward’s University College Assistance Migrant Program,
which is the longest-running CAMP in the nation.
