Master of Arts in Teaching
MAT Program Admission Criteria & Deadlines
Applicants to St. Edward’s University graduate programs must hold a
U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
or its equivalent. To be considered for admission, applicants should do the
following:
- Complete the application form and submit it, with the
application fee, résumé and response to the essay question,
to: Center for Academic Progress, Attn: Graduate Admission, 3001 S. Congress
Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704.
- Submit official transcripts of all previous college work
(one from each institution attended). Official transcripts should be sent
by the issuing institution directly to the Center for Academic Progress.
- Arrange for the Educational Testing Service to send official
reports of scores received on the GRE (if necessary).
- International students will need to provide
additional supporting materials to be considered.

Admission Criteria
- U.S. bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from
a regionally accredited institution
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement at the undergraduate
level evidenced by a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60
hours of study or a 2.75 GPA on all college-level work
- Aptitude for graduate study indicated by a minimum GRE
of 1,000 (composite of quantitative and verbal scores) with a minimum of
400 on the verbal score. Applicants who have earned an advanced degree
may waive the GRE requirement.
- Applicants to the Teacher Leadership track must be certified
teachers or have a significant background in education.
- An essay describing professional experience and career
aspirations
- A current professional résumé
- Applicants educated at the college level in a language
other than English must demonstrate oral and written English proficiency
by attaining a minimum of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL examination or its
equivalent in other formats.
- Evidence of ability to assume responsibility in the work
environment. Professional work experience is highly desirable. A large
majority of graduate students have more than five years of professional
work experience.
- Evidence of the potential to responsibly and successfully
complete a program of rigorous graduate studies

Unconditional Admission
St. Edward’s University assesses each applicant's potential
to contribute and successfully complete the graduate program. An applicant
who applies for unconditional admission must meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a regionally
accredited institution
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate
study or a GPA of 2.75 in all college-level work
- Minimum score of 1,000 on the GRE (verbal + quantitative)
with a minimum verbal score of 400
- International applicants must earn a minimum score of
550 on the paper-based TOEFL or its equivalent in other formats.
Conditional Admission
The university assesses each applicant's potential to contribute
and successfully complete a graduate program. A student who applies for conditional
admission must meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a regionally
accredited institution
- Minimum of 3 years professional work experience
- International applicants must earn a minimum score of
550 on the paper-based TOEFL or its equivalent in other formats.
and meet one of the following two criteria:
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate
study or GPA of 2.75 in all college-level work
- Minimum score of 1,000 on the GRE (verbal + quantitative)
with a minimum verbal score of 400
At the conclusion of the term in which a conditionally admitted
student completes or exceeds 12 hours, his or her academic record will be
reviewed. If the GPA is above 3.0, the student will be allowed to continue
the program and the conditional status will be removed. If the GPA is below
3.0, the student will be dismissed from the program and not allowed to continue.
Readmission
Students who do not take courses for three consecutive terms after
completing one or more courses must reapply if they wish to continue the
program. Students accepted into a program that defer enrollment for four
or more consecutive terms must reapply to begin the program.
To reapply, students must submit a new application and pertinent
supportive documents (e.g. transcripts of any work completed during the interim,
current résumé and a letter of intent). These documents are listed below.
