India Immersion Experience
While in India, the group will be working at Abhayadhama Human Development Center, which provides a stable environment for the rehabilitation of street boys and orphans. The name Abhayadhama is derived from two Sanskrit words: abhaya, meaning without fear, and dhama, meaning home. Thus, the center by its name — home without fear — is a place that offers love to those children who have been deprived of love, affection and dignity.
The Congregation of Holy Cross, which founded St. Edward's University, also founded Abhayadama in 1976. Our time at the center time will be spent working directly with the boys, along with Holy Cross and lay staff members.
Abhayadhama is located in Bangalore, India. Bangalore is said to be one of the fastest growing cities in Asia and has been referred to as their "silicon valley." Today, people from all over India and abroad migrate to Bangalore in search of jobs and opportunities. We will spend time examining the issues of globalization and poverty.
