Glenmary Farm: Appalachia
| Immersion Dates: |
Sunday, March 9–Saturday, March 15, 2008 |
| Where: |
Near Vanceburg, Kentucky in Appalachia |
| Site Description: |
Experience rural Appalachian culture through service, reflection and
meeting folks amidst woods, cow fields, and a creek. |
Glenmary Farms is dedicated to serving the needs of the people throughout Appalachia and the rural south — where the poverty level is twice the national average — and working for social justice. Missionaries and volunteers maintain and provide leadership for a volunteer-based farm that covers 56 acres near a small town in the Appalachian Mountains.
Living and working with students from other universities, we will divide into smaller work units to perform manual labor and home repairs and renovations. We will also visit a health center, socializing with developmentally disabled adults, and live in simplicity on the farm:
- Working in the garden
- Reflecting by a fire
- Experiencing Appalachian culture
- Sharing fun evenings with other college students
You will experience a unique life on the farm as you make a difference this spring break. Plumbing and central heat are limited, so plan on taking only one shower during the trip. In warmer weather students are able to swim on the farm. Meals are provided, which you'll help prepare.
