Graduation Procedures and Requirements

It is very important that you read and follow the steps below in order to graduate in as timely and efficient a manner as possible.  We suggest you print out this page and read the procedures carefully, and then enter your online intent below.

I. The semester before you intend to graduate:

  • Complete and submit an intent to graduate form online.  Late intents cannot be accepted.  Because of the detailed research needed to insure that the academic record of each candidate for graduation certification is evaluated accurately, intents to graduate forms can be accepted no later than the dates listed. The intent is due no later than the following dates:
Fall semester graduation - August 15
Spring semester graduation - December 15
      Summer graduation - April 15

  • Meet with your advising specialist for a degree plan audit. This audit identifies further coursework or other learning activities needed to ensure your graduation.
  • Complete all approved CLEP examinations or work at other institutions. This rule is necessary because it often is not possible for you to secure exam results or transcripts from other schools early enough to allow your graduation at the intended time.
  • Avoid leaving difficult coursework for your last semester, when you are encouraged to concentrate primarily on the Capstone course, Moral Issues in Society. (Remember that the prerequisites to this course are completion of Introduction To Critical Inquiry, Ethical Analysis, and a critical issues course.)
  • Be aware that in order to be certified for graduation, you should lack no more than 18 hours at the end of this semester.
  • Submit any portfolio work for evaluation no later than your intent to graduate form deadline (see below).
II. Semester of graduation:
  • Be sure you have a degree plan on file and have submitted your intent to graduate online (below).
  • Be sure you have at least a "C" (2.00) average for cumulative work and work in the major field. You must earn a grade of C or higher in English writing, computational skills, and college mathematics.
  • Be sure that you have satisfied the Computer Competencies which may be accessed through your account (different from computational skills requirement in general education requirements).
  • If you are taking courses from another institution in your last semester, St. Edward's cannot guarantee that the course results will reach our registrar's office in time to grant the degree.
  • Let your instructors know you intend to graduate this semester.
  • In anticipation of certification for graduation by the Dean of New College in this semester, be sure all CLEP credits, prior transfer work, and portfolio hours awarded are included on your SEU transcript.
  • Be sure you have met all financial obligations to the university, including payment for all credits awarded through assessment of prior learning.
  • Examine the accuracy of the Certification for Graduation that you receive from the dean prior to graduation. Be sure that you are doing what the certification specifies in order to fulfill all degree requirements.
  • Carefully follow further instructions from the Center for Academic Progress and the Registrar's Office, including the completion of a diploma name card enclosed with the certification letter.
  • Any student who completes the above requirements will graduate at the next regularly scheduled St. Edward's graduation date (May, August or December). All graduating New College students are encouraged to participate in the public commencement exercises.
