Joe O’Neal was born and raised in the Midwest, but has been in Austin since 1968. After completing his undergraduate degree in anthropology at Indiana University and studying graduate folklore there under a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he and his wife served in the Peace Corps for two years in Ghana. His graduate degrees are in anthropology from the University of Texas. Joe teaches courses including Cultural Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, Native Americans, Gender Roles, Human Rights, History of Africa, Introduction to Critical Inquiry, and the New College Capstone course, Moral Issues in Society. His research interests focus in the areas of human rights and indigenous peoples. He is a member of the American Anthropological Association and a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.
