Award-winning Novelist and Playwright to Speak at St. Edward's University

Award-winning novelist and playwright James Magnuson will give a public reading at

St. Edward's University on Tuesday, Nov. 9, as part of the Visiting Writers Series. Magnuson, the author of seven books, has written extensively for television shows such as, "Knots Landing" and "Class of '96." He has also written plays, a dozen of which have been produced.

Magnuson's most recent novel, Windfall, has been optioned by Bruce Willis' film company. Another novel, Ghost Dancing, was the 1989 winner of the Jesse Jones Award, given by the Texas Institute of Letters. Magnuson has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for his fiction and a Hodder Fellowship by Princeton University for his work in the theatre.

For the past 11 years, Magnuson has been the Director of the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. He currently spends his days at the university, writing and teaching.

The Visiting Writers Series brings working writers to campus to read from their work, talk about their writing and interact with students. Both the St. Edward's community and the greater Austin community have benefited from the inspiration of the poets, novelists and essayists who have shared their talents. The readings are free and open to the public.

Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross, St. Edward's University has been named as one of America's Best Colleges for 2005 by U.S. News & World Report and was selected by The Princeton Review for inclusion in the guide "Colleges with a Conscience."
