On Dec. 1, at 5:45 p.m., St. Edward's University invites the community to attend the fifth annual Las Posadas celebration. In Mexico, "las posadas" are celebrated on each of the nine days before Christmas to commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem , in search of room at the inn (la posada). After dark, a procession is formed, and everyone, including the tiniest children, takes part. The procession is led by two children carrying a little tray on which there are figures of Mary, riding a donkey, with Joseph and the angel. All those in the procession carry lighted candles and go from house to house singing and asking for lodging while another group inside refuses their request. When a kind innkeeper is finally found, and the door opened, the group outside is welcomed into the house. Afterwards, according to the Mexican tradition, the children break the piñata and the fiesta continues with typical Mexican food, like tamales, buñuelos and punch.
