Former United Nations Official To Speak at St. Edward's

St. Edward's University for its Second Annual Hilltopper Golf Tournament In recognition of International Education Week, St. Edward's University welcomes Sir Marrack Goulding, former United Nations official, to discuss "The Role of the United Nations and Conflict: Prevention, Management, Resolution, Reconstruction." Goulding will speak at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Jones Auditorium, Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Goulding comes to St. Edward's as part of the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence in Global Finance Speaker Series, which continues to provide access to resources and experts from around the globe. Every year, the Kozmetsky Center chooses its fall speakers to coincide with United Nations Day (Oct. 24) and International Education Week (Nov. 13–17).

Goulding recently retired in October as acting warden of St. Antony's College at the University of Oxford, a position he held since 1997. Previously he served as the United Nations' under-secretary-general for Special Political Affairs (1996-1993) and under-secretary-general for Peacekeeping Operations (1993-1997). Before joining the United Nations, he served for 27 years in the British Diplomatic Service, mainly in the Middle East, northern Africa and in New York.

In 2002, a memoir of his seven years in charge of United Nations peacekeeping, entitled, Peacemonger, was published by John Murray in London. The following year an American edition of the book, including an additional chapter on the consequences of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, was published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.
