Las Posadas Celebration — Thursday, Dec. 7
St. Edward's University, in collaboration with the Montopolis Community, invites everyone to attend the Sixth Annual Las Posadas Celebration. The candlelight procession concludes with traditional food and drink and entertainment by the St. Edward's University Ballet Folklórico, Mariachi Alas de Oro and Allison Elementary School Choir. The procession will begin at 5:45 p.m. in front of Main Building.
In Mexico, "las posadas" are celebrated on each of the nine days before Christmas to commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem, in search of room at the inn (la posada). After dark, a procession is formed, and everyone, including the smallest of children, takes part.
The procession is led by two children carrying a small tray on which there are figures of Mary, riding a donkey, with Joseph and the angel. All those in the procession carry lighted candles and go from house to house singing and asking for lodging while another group inside refuses their request.
When a kind innkeeper is finally found, and the door opened, the group outside is welcomed into the house. Afterwards, according to the Mexican tradition, the children break the piñata and the fiesta continues with typical Mexican food, like tamales, buñuelos and punch.
