Political Commentator for ABC News Cokie Roberts to Speak at St. Edward's University Graduation

Roberts is a senior news analyst for NPR and a political commentator for ABC News. She is a recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award, public radio's highest honor, and is the first broadcast journalist to win the prestigious Everett McKinley Dirksen Award. Her analysis and reporting have earned her three Emmy awards and induction into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. The American Women in Radio and Television named Roberts as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting.

Graduation practice will be held from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. in Mabee Ballroom, Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center.

Baccalaureate Mass and Instructions for Graduates: May 2

Graduates will assemble at 6:30 p.m. wearing caps and gowns at St. Ignatius Martyr Church, 126 W. Oltorf. Mass will begin at 7 p.m.



Outside of broadcasting, Roberts and her husband, Steve, write a weekly column from their home in Washington, D.C. Syndicated by United Media, the column appears in newspapers around the country. They also serve as contributing editors to USA Weekend magazine. Additionally, Roberts' writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic. In 2000, she and her husband published the book From This Day Forward, an account of famous American marriages that also chronicled their own 35-year marriage, which has produced two children and six grandchildren. She is the author of three other books: We Are Our Mothers' Daughters, Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation, and the recently published Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation, which is currently #4 on the New York Times best seller list.

Roberts graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1964 with a BA in Political Science. In 1985 she received the Distinguished Alumnae Achievement Award in recognition of "excellence and distinction in professional pursuits." To date, she has received more than 15 honorary degrees, including an appointment in 2003 to the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Angela Vorpahl, of Katy, Texas, will deliver the valedictory address. Vorpahl will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish. A student-athlete, she served as captain of the Hilltopper Volleyball team. Vorpahl also received the 2008 St. Edward's University Presidential Award.
