Softball and Men's Golf Teams Qualify for National Tournament
This is the first time in school history that two teams advance to a NCAA National Tournament in the same year. The 22-ranked St. Edward’s University softball team made its way through the loser’s bracket to win the NCAA Division II South Central Regional by defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State, 4-1 in the championship game on Sunday, May 11 in San Angelo, Texas, while the seventh-ranked St. Edward’s University men’s golf team shot a one-under 283 to win the 2008 NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional on Wednesday, May 14 at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.
Softball Advances to First-Ever National Tournament
St. Edward’s (51-15) won the opening game versus Abilene Christian, 3-1, with a walk-off home from junior Jamie Zilverberg. The Hilltoppers dropped their next game versus host Angelo state, 5-1. After falling to the loser’s bracket, St. Edward’s tallied three-straight victories, which included a revenge win versus Angelo State, 3-2. The Hilltoppers then had to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State twice to win the championship. St. Edward’s won both games in dramatic fashion, scoring in their final at-bat.
Seniors Robin Becker, Kristen Lozano, and Mandy Phillips along with freshman Diana Cezeaux were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Lozano was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
The squad will travel to Houston to compete in the eight-team National Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14 when they take on Barry University. The four-day event will take place at Memorial Park.

The championship game will be shown live on CBS College Sports Television at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
Men’s Golf Team Heads to Nationals — Second Time in School History
St. Edward’s (278-280-283=841) defeated second place Abilene Christian (299-292-281=872) by 31 strokes. Hilltopper sophomore Collin Mayer (69-65-75=209) finished in second place, while senior Jeff Howard (70-70-70=210) took third place. All five St. Edward’s University individual players finished in the Top 10 for the tournament.
This is the second time in school history that St. Edward’s men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA National Tournament. In 2005, the Hilltoppers finished third in the national tournament in Savannah, Ga.
The men’s golf team will travel to Houston to compete in the 72-hole National Championship beginning Wednesday, May 14. The four-day event will take place at Memorial Park.
