Immigration Experts Gather for Feb. 6 Conference

Register for daylong event at ACC Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Rd.

St. Edward’s University, together with Austin Community College is co-sponsoring the second annual immigration conference to increase awareness of the facts and concerns surrounding this issue.

“Immigration, Education and Our Future Conference: A Review of Policy and Practice” will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Multipurpose Room 8500 of the Eastview Campus 3401 Webberville Road. Registration is $30 per person, and lunch is included.

“This conference is a great opportunity to become informed about the immigration issue, what it means to Austin, and what impact it has on education,” says Richard Armenta, ACC associate vice president for student success.

Topics to be covered include education, family, and economic questions by speakers who have both national and local experience. They include:

  • Economist Jon Hockenyos of Texas Perspectives, an economic analysis and public policy consulting firm
  • Immigration attorney Paul Parson of Austin
  • Kevin Appleby, director of migration and refugee services for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
  • Dr. Paul Hart, associate professor of history at Texas State University in San Marcos

Coordinating the event for ACC and St. Edward's University are the Latino/Latin American Studies Center, the Center for Public Policy and Political Studies, and the Office of Student Success.
