Green by Design
Continuing the university’s tradition of recycling older buildings, the building underwent both interior and exterior renovations. The renovation was designed by Specht Harpman, Austin and New York-based architects who have also designed other spaces around campus including the Marketing Office in Main Building. They were able to incorporate several green features into the building, including:
- White reflective roof on the addition
- Sun-shade system to minimize heat gain from the afternoon sun
- New roof insulation in the original building
- Low-toxin paint, sealants and adhesives
- Energy-efficient lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling
Doyle is now cooled from the campus chilled water system and much of the exterior shell and interior walls were recycled to avoid sending construction materials to the landfill. New windows were placed throughout the building to maintain and increase visibility and natural light. And the new addition includes a feature wall outside the classrooms, a hallmark of Specht Harpman’s design.
New Gathering Space
Students and other members of the campus community will enjoy the new outdoor, shaded space in front of Doyle Hall. The new landscape maintains existing trees and will use hearty, native plants to conserve on irrigation. Tables and chairs will encourage people to hang out and study, and electrical outlets and a wireless zone will allow students to use laptops
