2010: The Year of Service

2010: The Year of Service
Sign up to Help St. Edward's Complete 75,000 Hours of Service

In celebration of the 125th anniversary, St. Edward’s University has launched the 125 Service Challenge by asking students, faculty, staff and alumni to volunteer their time. The ultimate goal: to increase the 63,000 total service hours the university generated last year to 75,000 by the end of 2010.

“The 125 Service Challenge is a true testament to the spirit and character of the community at St. Edward's University,” says Liza Manjarrez, assistant director, Campus Ministry. Our numbers are showing great promise and we are on track for completing our goal of 75,000 as a university community. In order to achieve our goal, we all have to work together. Whether it's one, five or 125 hours, every logged hour counts!”

We encourage the entire university community to get involved and sign up for the challenge. Once registered, you will be able to search for volunteer opportunities. Currently, the university has 177 registered volunteers and about 1,500 hours logged. To log your own hours towards the university goal, sign up at www.stedwards.edu/service.

The goal of 75,000 hours may sound like a lot of time, but Lou Serna, who heads up Campus Ministry’s Office of Service and Community Involvement, isn’t worried. “We have a lot of students committed to service and justice, a lot of them are doing it on their own,” he says. “We’re hoping the challenge will bring those students and other people out of the woodwork.”

Throughout the year, Serna will help connect volunteers with the service that best suits them. After meeting with a student, Serna might recommend various local service opportunities.
