Operation T: Get Involved!

Hi!

My name is Irma Fernandez. It is an honor to have Operation T included in such a historical event like the 125th Birthday of St. Edward’s University.

Operation T is a Brown Scholarship project that accepts gently used and/or new T-shirts and distributes them to underprivileged communities, specifically children, around the world. The goal of Operation T is to help those in need, while demonstrating how easy it is for anyone to make a difference.

The vision of Operation T came to me during the fall of 2009. I was getting ready for class and was looking for a T-shirt to wear, when it dawned on me – I had so many shirts to choose from. T-shirts I had worn only once or twice, and some I had not worn at all. In fact, a few still had price tags attached.

In that second, I knew I had to do something. I spent the rest of the school year with the idea of Operation T in the back of my mind. It wasn’t until I attended LeaderShape in the summer of 2010 that I was convinced that Operation T could become a reality. I applied for a Brown Scholarship and after receiving the Brown award this fall, the mission of Operation T is in full swing.

Operation T embodies the mission of St. Edward’s University by providing opportunities to have “an international perspective” while educating people about the role we all play in our global community.

Operation T is committed to including as many organizations and students from across campus as possible. This is done by teaming up with Residence Life (RAs and Living Learning Communities), Campus Ministry (SBE), and Student Life (Leadershape alumni, Invisible Children, Social Justice and Service Outreach). These groups help with collecting, sorting and organizing the T-shirts donations.

Once collected, the T-shirts will be donated to various drop zones, such as a designated church in Northern Mexico and various locations from Campus Ministry’s Alternative Spring Break Experiences trips.

Make sure to stop by our table at the 125th Birthday Party on Friday, Oct. 22 and donate a T-shirt. Everyone that donates a shirt to Operation T will receive a 125th Birthday Weekend koozie. But more importantly you will be helping someone in need.

See you there!

Irma Fernandez
