Member of St. Edward's University Marketing Office Designs Photocommunications Catalog: Fridays in Focus

Joanie Cahill, graphic designer in the St. Edward’s University Marketing Office, worked with Associate Professor of Photocommunications Bill Kennedy and his students this summer to design a catalog of their work — 80 photographs capturing the spirit of Friday night football from the Panhandle to East Texas.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum partnered with Kennedy and his students to photograph the unique culture that is Texas high school football. The students spent Fall 2010 exploring and documenting the state’s football communities, boosters, mascots, cheerleaders, bands, drill teams, players, locker rooms and stadiums, coaches, and much more.

The title of the catalog, Fridays in Focus, brings together the purpose of their project — capturing Texas high school football typically played on Friday nights and brought into focus through their photography.

“My role was to design the catalog, visually interpreting the football concept and giving the book its own feel, while honoring the integrity of the students’ images,” Cahill said.

The creative team decided the cover should look like a football field with white hashed yard lines and Fridays in Focus sprayed onto the turf.

“I cut out a stencil with the title and hash marks to scale, and went to work finding the right grass for the job,” Cahill said.

After trying out several methods of spraying onto real grass around campus, and on various sports fields, she came to the conclusion that AstroTurf might be the better surface. She gave it a try and it worked perfectly. “We photographed the finished surface, and that is how the cover came to be,” Cahill said.

Creating the Cover of Fridays in Focus

Once the cover was complete, Cahill focused her attention on laying out the students’ work. “I let the inside pages meld with the cover concept using the same stenciled font for the students’ names,” she said. “The photos speak for themselves. I didn’t want to use any treatments to take away from their artwork.”

The final product turned out just as Cahill wanted. See it for yourself. Fridays in Focus is now available for purchase in the St. Edward’s University Bookstore and The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum bookstore.

The students learned first-hand how art professionals interact and work with curators, a museum, marketing professionals and the public.

Fridays in Focus is a great piece for the students to include in their portfolios to show the real-world experience they gained from the project,” Cahill said. “It’s a physical piece that represents their photo exhibit in the museum.”
