Dr. George E. Martin
You have devoted your life to higher education, and since 1999, have served as president of a small university with big ideas. Calling your role not one of power, but of possibility, you have led St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross, in its quest to gain to national recognition as one of the best small universities in the country.
During your tenure, enrollment has grown dramatically. You have expanded St. Edward’s global reach, creating a portal campus in Western France, partnerships with 12 universities in 10 countries, with plans for even more by 2015. St. Edward’s was named an “Up-and-Coming University” by U.S. News & World Report in both 2010 and 2011. Alumni and friends have responded to your vision by investing more than $82 million in the University. As Heraclius wrote, “Big results require big ambitions.”
And have always been ambitious on behalf of Catholic Higher Education. Prior to St. Edward’s, you served another Catholic institution, St. Peter’s University in New Jersey, for 30 years—as a faculty member, department chair, academic dean and then academic vice president.
Professionally, you are generous with your time and expertise, serving as chair of the Board of the Council of Independent Colleges, chair of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas and on the board of the American Council on Education. In the local community, organizations such as Ballet Austin and the United Way count you among their volunteer leaders.
For your bold and creative vision of what a university can become, for your example of servant leadership, and for your devotion to Catholic higher education, Stonehill College is proud to bestow upon you, Dr. George E. Martin, honoris causa, the degree of Doctor of Education.
