St. Edward's University Establishes The Dr. Allan W. Hook Endowed Wild Basin Creative Research Fund
Fund will provide research opportunities to students across disciplines
AUSTIN, Texas (July 11, 2013) — St. Edward’s University is pleased to announce the establishment of The Dr. Allan W. Hook Endowed Wild Basin Creative Research Fund. Made possible by the commitment and generosity of Dr. Allan W. Hook and Rosemary Guzman Hook, the fund will support creative research by students in the schools of Natural Sciences, Education, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Management and Business, and Humanities. The fund will also offer research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from other institutions that are based at the university’s Wild Basin Creative Research Center and the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve system.
The fund honors Hook’s life work and dedication to providing students with opportunities both in and outside of the classroom. His philosophy is that “one can learn more from the natural world than from the human-made world.” The fund will promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Wild Basin Preserve and the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve system.
For Hook, Wild Basin was a logical choice. “When my wife and I decided how to best continue my lifelong work in biology while supporting her interests in the humanities, we turned to the basin because of its usefulness across all fields of study,” says Hook. “I envisioned all or most of the schools getting involved to use the basin because of what the natural world can teach us [through] creative research.”
Students in any discipline may be considered for grant funding by submitting proposals, which will be vetted by the Director of the Wild Basin Creative Research Center in conjunction with the Wild Basin Committee. A pool of finalists will be selected during the fall academic term. Award recipients will be recognized as Wild Basin Scholars.
“I hope that students [will] develop a continued interest in the complexity and necessity of a healthy environment and how this is still possible through the conservation and sustainable utilization of nature,” says Hook.
