Overview:

St. Edward’s University of Austin, TX seeks a creative, innovative, dynamic and visionary Director of Instructional and Emerging Technology.  The university is strongly committed to leveraging technology in pursuit of our educational mission.  This commitment is reflected in the university’s current strategic plan, Academic Distinctiveness and Global Preparedness, which calls for the implementation of new instructional methodologies associated with emerging technologies.  The plan  also jointly charges the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the university’s Library with creating “a 21st century learning environment…in which faculty and students access, assess and create knowledge in a world-wide exchange of ideas.”  The Director of Instructional and Emerging Technology provides leadership in the development of institutional vision with respect to the use of technology in pursuit of the university’s educational mission.  He or she also provides collaborative leadership in creating and executing strategies to realize that vision.  The director reports to the Vice President for Information Technology.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with faculty, librarians, technologists, academic support personnel and others to identify new, innovative instructional methodologies and associated technologies.  Provide collaborative leadership in the evaluation, selection, implementation and assessment of these methodologies. 
  • Collaborate with faculty, librarians, technologists, academic support personnel and others to identify, evaluate, select, implement and assess instructional and emerging technologies to enhance teaching and learning in the context of the university’s current instructional methodologies.
  • Work closely with faculty to identify effective instructional technologies compatible with their course learning goals and pedagogical styles.
  • Lead the collaborative development of relevant strategies and implementation plans associated with instructional methodologies and technologies.  Oversee the execution of these plans.
  • Oversee the identification, creation and delivery of relevant training and development opportunities for faculty focused on the enhancement of teaching and learning.
  • Oversee the identification, creation and delivery of relevant technology training for staff and students.  Administer training and other activities associated with the student computer competency requirement.
  • Provide collaborative leadership and oversight in the arena of learning analytics.
  • Collaborate with other leaders within OIT and across the university to define the nature of the digital environment we wish to create for faculty and students.  Focus on learning and the university’s strategic priorities in this context. 
  • Cultivate an organizational focus on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning, and on technological innovation in the context of teaching and learning.
  • Lead organizational development and design efforts to enhance the critical capabilities of the Office of Instructional and Emerging Technology.
  • Supervise, mentor and manage the staff members of the Office of Instructional and Emerging Technology to promote the achievement of organizational and university goals and to contribute to employees’ professional development.
Qualifications:
  • Substantial leadership experience within organizations providing technology support for teaching and learning in a university setting; substantial leadership experience within organizations providing support for technologically-mediated learning; substantial experience providing faculty support and development services in the context of technologically-enhanced teaching and learning; demonstrated ability to lead successful implementations in the context of technology and higher education; demonstrated understanding of the many complexities associated with the successful introduction and support of new instructional methodologies.
  • Familiarity with accreditation guidelines associated with technologically-mediated learning.
  • University-level teaching experience is preferred; teaching experience in technologically-mediated formats is also preferred.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction; ability to work independently; willingness to take direction; ability to participate in group planning processes; ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple assignments, initiatives and priorities; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Broad familiarity with a wide range of instructional and emerging technologies.  Familiarity with the complexities of supporting such technologies at the enterprise level. 
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and apply new technologies, tools, techniques and methodologies.  Open to change.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.  Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues with different areas and levels of technical expertise.
  • Strong organizational skills, proven ability to manage time and priorities, ability to complete complex projects and tasks with attention to detail.
  • Graduate degree is required; Ph.D. in Education, Instructional Technology or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check is required.
