FRESHMAN ORIENTATION AND ENROLLMENT

The New Undergraduate Student Orientation Program at St. Edward’s is designed to provide incoming freshmen with the tools and know-how needed to guarantee a smooth transition into college life.  Students will learn more about their major, meet with an academic advisor, register for classes and become acquainted with the services, organizations and people that make St. Edward’s such a remarkable place.
Participation in one Orientation session is required and freshman may choose from any of the six dates listed above.  Students are encouraged to attend earlier sessions so any needs or concerns may be addressed before arriving in the fall.
*Please note that participation in Freshmen Orientation is restricted to students who have submitted at $150 enrollment deposit

To sign up for orientation:
To sign up for freshman orientation, use the online orientation registration form, starting on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. To use this system, click on “Accepted Students” at www.gotostedwards.com . Before you can register for New Undergraduate Student Orientation, you must submit your nonrefundable $150 enrollment deposit.  (If you submit your enrollment deposit online, please allow one business day before registering for Orientation.  This ensures that your deposit is processed and that you can successfully access the online Orientation registration form).  If you have further questions, please contact the New Undergraduate Student Orientation Office a 512-448-8584 or 800-775-6755.

Placement Testing:
Testing during Orientation provides the information necessary to place students in the appropriate level of English, Math and foreign language.  Based on students’ SAT and/or ACT results, some will be required to come to placement testing in Math and/or English prior to registering for courses.  Testing for Spanish, French and German is required for students with high school credit or other experience with the language.  Students, for whom it is required, will be notified of the requirement at check-in.

Orientation Fee:
An Orientation fee of $200 will be added to each student’s account.  This fee will cover all Orientation costs, including meals, registration and entertainment.

Eligible Students:
All traditional freshmen who have submitted their $150 enrollment deposit are eligible.  Please remember that parents are encouraged to participate.

Check-In:
Students will check-in anytime from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on the first day of the Orientation session.  Check in will take place in the following locations:
Session 1-5: Dujarie Residence Hall
Session 6: Ragsdale Center, 2nd floor
Orientation is completed on the 2nd day at 4:00 p.m.

Transportation:
Airport shuttle service will be provided at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the morning of check-in.  Return transportation will be provided at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on day two of Sessions 1-5.

*Taxi service is also readily available at the airport.

Housing:
Students participating in Orientation Sessions 1-5 are required to stay on campus for the one night of Orientation.  If you are registered for Session 6 you will move into your permanent residence hall on campus, or you must commute to Orientation if living off campus.  Parents who wish to join their son or daughter for Orientation are encouraged to make reservations at an Austin-area hotel.

What to bring:
Students should plan on bringing standard twin sheets (36”x75”), a blanket or sleeping bag, a pillow, towels, casual clothing, alarm clock and any other personal items needed for the one-night stay (Sessions 1-5).   Please also remember to bring proof of health insurance immunization records for our registration process.

Family & Friend Orientation:
For Parents, Family and Friends of New Freshman.  A full orientation has been designed to address your specific interests and occurs during both days of Freshman Orientation Session 1-6.  Parent, Family and Friend Orientation Check-in will occur in the same location and at the same time as the student’s.

Registration & Payment of Fees:
During Orientation, students will be registering for their fall courses.  After registration, students will receive a confirmation of registration with payment information in the mail.


TRANSFER ADVISING AND REGISTRATION
The Transfer Orientation program at St. Edward’s is designed to help transfer students to become more familiar with the faculty, staff and services available on campus.   Transfer students may choose from two transfer orientation sessions August 12 or August 17.  Transfer Orientation begins that morning with check-in from 9-10 a.m. in the Ragsdale Center, 2nd floor, and continues through 5:00 p.m. that day.  Please note that there will be additional advising and registration the mornings following orientation.  Transfer students who wish to secure classes prior to orientation may do so in Early Advising and Registration which takes place between July 22 – July 31, 2009.

If you would like to take advantage of early registration you must:

  1. Be sure that all official academic transcripts have been submitted and received by the Undergraduate & Admission Office: 1-800-555-0164
  2. Submit a $150 deposit to the Admissions Office.  Students who are unable to participate in this early registration period may meet with an advisor and register during Transfer Orientation program.
  3. Students should contact Academic Planning & Support Services at 512-448-8660 to make an advising and registration appointment and allow 2-business days between making your enrollment deposit and advising and registration appointment.  Academic Planning and Support Services will begin taking calls on June 1, 2009.

IMPORTANT: It is the student’s responsibility to confirm the arrival of transcripts prior to advising and registration. Evaluation of credit will be on these transcripts and the academic major indicated on the admissions application.

International Orientation and Enrollment

Attendance at orientation is required of all new and transfer international students.  Students must attend orientation in order to register for classes.

Placement Testing
All students without U.S. college-level credit for English composition and math are required to take the English and math placement tests. Students will be placed in appropriate English and math courses based on their results and cannot register for classes until they have received their test results. Students required to take tests will be notified at check-in for orientation.

Course Registration and Payment of Fees
After students have attended the full orientation program and completed the placement tests, if required, they will meet with an advisor to schedule their classes. After selecting classes, students will get a written confirmation of registration and payment information.

Arrival in Austin
Students who would like to be picked up at the airport should contact the Office of International Education at 512-428-1051 as soon as they know their flight details.

Check In
All international students should report at 9 a.m. on the 1st day of orientation to the Ragsdale Center, Main Lobby to check in for international student orientation. This will be the second day of orientation for transfer international students and the first day of orientation for freshmen and exchange international students. Students should bring their passport, I-94 card, I-20 or DS-2019, proof of health insurance, immunization record, and all other immigration documents with them to check in.
