COLLEGE ACCESS LOAN (CAL) PROGRAM
Fixed Rate CAL: 6.0% Interest Rate
BEFORE
APPLYING
Please have the following information available:
• Borrower’s (Student’s) Social Security Number, Driver’s
License Number, and Date of Birth;
• Name, address, and telephone number of two references, residing at different
addresses;
•
Name, address, and telephone number of a credit-worthy payment
guarantor (cosigner);
•
Requested loan amount
Contact your financial advisor for helping determining the amount of CAL you
can borrow. The maximum amount is the difference between the cost of attendance
for the loan period minus your other financial assistance.
We recommend applying for the whole academic year’s amount (typically Fall & Spring)
at one time. Remember that the CAL is subject to either a 3% or 5% origination
fee deducted directly from the loan at the time of disbursement. The origination
fee is set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and is determined
by the credit rating of the borrower and the cosigner (if applicable).
•
Loan period
When asked for the period of enrollment you intend this loan to cover, please
select from the following dates:
FALL 2008–SPRING 2009
8/25/08–5/7/09
FALL 2008 ONLY
8/25/08–12/11/08
SPRING 2009 ONLY
1/12/09–5/7/09
Student Financial Services strongly suggests that you apply
for a full year's academic loan (Fall and Spring) if you plan to enroll for both
semesters. Subsequent loan requests could be declined due to funding limits.
We encourage you to contact the THECB 7 to 10 days after
you have submitted your application to ensure they have
received your paperwork and that the loan forms were completed
correctly. They can be reached by phone at either 512-427-6340
or 800-242-3062.
You should be notified by mail regarding the approval
or denial of the loan once the THECB has processed your
application.
If your application for the CAL is denied, the THECB will inform you of the
reason. They may also provide recommendations for amending your application
in order to secure a more favorable result.
