POST
9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
|
|
The new GI Bill
will go into effect August 1, 2009. Chapter 33
will not always be the most beneficial route for
the veteran. Every veteran is encouraged to call
1 888 GI BILL 1 to speak with a VA counselor in
weighing the costs and benefits of Chapter 30 vs.
Chapter 33.
Should the veteran decide to participate in Chapter 33 they will
need to apply via the VA form 1990 to receive a Certificate of Eligibility
(CEO), which they may then scan and email, fax, or submit in person
to St. Edward’s VA office. The VA will begin accepting VA forms
1990 May 1. Should you have further questions feel free to review
the Chapter 33 website available here or Military.com’s summary
of the benefits available here.

St. Edwards is
proud to announce its participation in the Yellow
Ribbon Program to further demonstrate the school’s
dedication to serving the Veteran population.
The Yellow Ribbon Program provision of the Post
9/11 GI Bill allows institutions to enter into
an agreement with VA to fund tuition costs above
the highest in-state undergraduate tuition rate.
VA will match each additional dollar that an
institution of higher learning (IHL) contributes
towards an eligible student’s tuition costs,
up to 50 percent of the difference between the
tuition and fees covered by the post 9/11 GI
Bill and the total cost of tuition and fees.
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit
rate (based on service requirements) may receive
this funding. IHLs will offer this additional
benefit to eligible individuals on a first come,
first served basis. Detailed information including
a list of participating Yellow Ribbon institutions
is available here.

The Troops
To Teachers (TTT) Program is a Department of
Education initiative which assists military
veterans with bachelor's degrees to become
public school teachers. As part of the "No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001," TTT was
funded to provide stipends of up to $5,000
to pay for the certification programs of retired
military veterans, certain drilling reservists,
and National Guard personnel. TTT is also offering
a bonus of $10,000 for eligible participants
who are hired on high-need campuses. The funding
may be used to pay for any state-approved teacher
certification program at a post-baccalaureate
level, either through a university program
or alternative certification program.
Since many of our eligible veterans pursue
their certification through the university
route, brochures are available in our office
and at the School of Education Office, HCH
Rm 102, here on campus. You may also contact
TTT directly at 1-800-810-5484, their web
site is www.esc13.net/troops.
Their office is at 5701 Springdale Road,
Austin, TX 78723-3675.
