Before the fall semester starts, incoming freshmen across Texas and the U.S. gather at Summer Send-Off parties to mingle with other Hilltoppers, ask questions of alumni and get excited about school. Hear what Hilltopper parent Maria Crumley of New Orleans has to say about hosting (and attending) one of these events. And see photos from our 2016 Summer Send-Offs.
Hosting a send-off party is an enjoyable way to connect with new Hilltopper families as they get ready for the transition to college. We’ve hosted two send-offs at our home in New Orleans — last summer and this summer. They were casual, fun and easy to plan, with light refreshments and a simple agenda organized by the St. Edward’s staff.
Everyone who attends seems to really appreciate this event. Hilltoppers hear from current students, alumni and representatives from St. Edward’s. And they have a chance to get to know students and parents from their home city. There’s an air of excitement during the gathering over meeting others embarking on the same journey.
When Tom and I were asked to host a send-off, we had no problem saying yes. St. Edward’s has been a wonderful school for our son, Thomas, who graduated last May. Five years ago, we traveled across the country looking at colleges with him and had a challenge finding the right school.
Then we learned about St. Edward’s from my cousin in Houston. Her daughters attended the university, and she called it the best-kept secret in Texas.
When we visited St. Edward’s, Thomas knew it was the right fit. It met what he wanted academically and socially and was the perfect size. And he loved Austin — its music scene and the whole vibe of the city. He thrived at St. Edward’s. During his time there, he studied abroad in Spain and had a summer internship in Austin. After graduating, he landed a job with Adlucent, a digital technology firm headquartered in Austin.
St. Edward’s is a great school, and we want more families in the New Orleans area to know about it. Hosting a Summer Send-Off is an ideal way to create awareness and support future graduates. Most of all, it’s an opportunity to give back to a school community that you’ve received many good things from. I’m happy to see that since we first learned about St. Edward’s, it’s no longer a secret in our city.
