Special Traditions Honor Our Graduates
Hilltop Send-Off Brings the St. Edward’s Experience Full Circle
Few milestones in a student’s life will hold more pride, joy and memories than their college graduation day. St. Edward’s honors our graduating seniors with cherished traditions that celebrate their achievements and lifelong connection to the hilltop.
In the days leading to commencement, our graduating seniors take part in Hilltop Send-Off ceremonies reserved exclusively for them. These traditions reflects back to their induction into St. Edward’s as freshmen. It begins with the Legacy Walk. Dressed in their caps and gowns, and wearing the university medallion they received as freshmen, graduates walk together through the heart of campus. The procession takes them around the university seal plaza and up the steps of Main Building.
As freshmen, they took this same walk, entering their college career through the historic red doors of Main Building. Now, as graduates, they exit through the red doors, symbolizing the completion of their undergraduate academic careers and entry into the St. Edward's alumni community. Alumni, faculty and classmates await the graduates' arrival as they pass through the red doors.
Immediately following the Legacy Walk, the atmosphere turns festive as the Red Doors Revelry begins on the hilltop lawn. In front of Main Building, an arch of blue and gold balloons frames the Austin skyline. Graduates receive a gift and enjoy a champagne toast with President George Martin, a warm welcome from alumni and time to celebrate with their classmates and professors.
The day before commencement, a Baccalaureate Mass is held that pays tribute to our graduates, giving thanks for the blessings given to them and their families. This Catholic ceremony is open to all graduating seniors, as well as their families and friends.
For Hilltoppers, these meaningful traditions enrich their graduation experience and the beginning of their journey into the world.
