Efficacious counselors are people who know who they are, what they value, and how they want to live out their values. Counselor education entails the teaching and training of students in such a way that they clarify their values, develop their personal conceptualization of how they understand counseling, and build their practical skills through various experientially guided courses. Training counseling students does not involve telling them what to do; it takes seriously the premise that counseling students should and can get in touch with their personal values so as to shape the way they want to work. A well-integrated balance of theory and practice is the bedrock of a counseling program. The integration of theory and practice - thinking and doing - is a continually evolving process for counselors throughout their careers, and such integration is the hallmark of a practitioner as opposed to a technician.
