Professor of Writing and Rhetoric, Department Chair

A native of New Orleans, Mary Rist earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas, Austin. A faculty member at St. Edward's since 1994, she has served as director of Freshman Studies and Associate Dean of Humanities. She is currently chair of the Literature, Writing, and Rhetoric Department and serves as the Faculty Fellow in Global Learning with the Center for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Rist's areas of research and teaching include principles and practices of grammar, editing, discourse analysis, and second language writing. Recent publications involve writing program administration and, particularly, the development and assessment of undergraduate writing degree programs.
