Emergencies while Studying Abroad

Faculty or staff on-site at your study abroad program are usually the fastest and most helpful resource in an emergency situation. Please contact them first for immediate assistance. If your emergency requires any SEU office be involved immediately, contact Campus Police and they can connect you to the appropriate contact from the necessary office (Health and Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Global Engagement Office, etc.).

Health Insurance

All SEU students who study abroad are covered by international health insurance that GEO purchases for them. Before you go abroad, you will receive information from our insurance provider, Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) that contains your insurance card, a verification letter, and general information about how to use the insurance while abroad.

Immigration Documents for International Students (Non-Emergencies)

Immigration Document Signatures

If you forgot to have your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 signed for travel before leaving the U.S., check to see when it was last signed. Travel signatures are good for (1) full year from the date they were last signed.

If your I-20 or DS-2019 hasn't been signed within the past year from your date of return to the U.S., email the Global Engagement Office (GEO) at iss [at] stedwards.edu. A new I-20 or DS-2019 will be created for you. You will be sent instructions on how to sign up for shipping through eShip Global (service used to send immigration documents). NOTE: You are responsible for paying for shipping costs. Pay online by credit card when you create your account. If you will need it mailed to you within the U.S., please confirm the mailing address with your international student advisor via email.

I-20s and DS-2019s are confidential immigration documents. If you have a friend in Austin who will pick up your I-20 or DS-2019, you must email the Global Engagement Office (GEO) at iss [at] stedwards.edu to give permission as well as the name of the person picking up the documents.

NOTE: Only ORIGINAL I-20s and DS-2019s are valid for travel. Copies will not be accepted by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers. GEO does not email copies of I-20s or DS-2019s.

Forgotten/Lost/Stolen/Damaged Immigration Documents

If you left your I-20 or DS-2019 in Austin before traveling, email GEO at iss [at] stedwards.edu. A new I-20 or DS-2019 will be created for you (unless the original was left in the GEO).

NOTE: I-20s and DS-2019s are confidential immigration documents. If you have a friend in Austin who will pick up your I-20 or DS-2019, you must email the Global Engagement Office (GEO) at iss [at] stedwards.edu to give permission as well as the name of the person picking up the documents.

Letter Requests

If you require a letter from GEO for travel/immigration purposes, email the Global Engagement Office (GEO) at iss [at] stedwards.edu. Please be specific about the purpose for the letter and any special content that needs to be included. Indicate whether a scanned copy or an original is required.

NOTE: Letter requests require advanced warning. Please allow 2-4 business days from the request date for the letter to be created.

You will be emailed with either the scanned letter or instructions for shipping through eShip Global so that we can send it to you (if you are outside the U.S.). You are responsible for paying for shipping costs. The shipping costs should be paid online by credit card when you create your account. If you will need it mailed to you within the U.S., please confirm the mailing address with your Immigration Advisor.
