This year 26 students from St. Edward’s University applied for Fulbright awards. Half of those students were finalists and 10 of them were winners.

In each of the past few years, St. Edward’s University students have won approximately four to six Fulbright awards. This year’s leap shows the emphasis the institution has placed on helping students be in position to apply for and win these competitive opportunities.

"For the last seven years, through programs like the Summer Academic Excellence Awards, the Honors Program, and partnerships with key departments across campus, St. Edward's has invested time and money in supporting students as they develop portfolios of experiences that help credential them for the Fulbright program,” said Caroline Morris, director of fellowships, “Over time, there has been a growing peer culture among our top students around Fulbright. We are proud to see those efforts pay off and delighted to send our students to every corner of the globe, from Malaysia to Germany to Australia."

Having 10 Fulbright winners is an exciting honor for St. Edward’s University. Although the winners per school fluctuate every year, winning 10 puts the university on par with institutions like Notre Dame, Stanford and Brown University.

Jana Soares ’15 won the university’s second full grant in its history, for biology research in Australia. She will be working with Cynthia Whitchurch, PhD, the founding director of the UTS Microbial Imaging Facility at the ithree institute at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.
