St. Edward’s University Welcomes Interim President Matthew Shank

AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Edward’s University Board of Trustees and the campus community welcome Matthew Shank as he officially assumes the role of interim president on July 1.

An accomplished leader in higher education, Shank previously served as president of Marymount University, a Catholic institution in Arlington, Virginia. Under his leadership Marymount experienced significant growth in enrollment, fundraising, academic programming and community engagement. Shank brings a distinguished career in university administration, strategic planning and mission-driven leadership to St. Edward’s, where he will focus on propelling the university’s strategic vision forward.

“During the past few weeks, I’ve received words of support and encouragement from countless students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters,” Shank told Hilltoppers today. “Walking from my temporary housing in St. André Apartments to my office in the Main Building and around campus during the evening reminded me of the beauty of our campus and gave me a sense of our shared purpose.”

Shank will serve a limited term of up to two years. The Board of Trustees will initiate preparation for a comprehensive, inclusive national search for a permanent president, which is expected to launch in spring 2027.
