The Most Reverend John McCarthy Lecture Series on the Catholic Church in the 21st Century

The series honors the Most Reverend John McCarthy, who led the Diocese of Austin from 1985 to 2001, and underscores the university’s commitment to its Catholic roots and Holy Cross heritage.

Held on campus through the School of Arts and Humanities, the McCarthy Lecture Series brings Catholic religious and lay experts from around the country to discuss issues facing the Catholic Church in the 21st century. The lectures are free and open to the public.

The next McCarthy Lecture will be on Monday, March 2, 2026 at Jones Auditorium at St. Edward's University
St. Edward’s University is honored to host one of the preeminent voices in the Catholic world, Dr. Massimo Faggioli, for a lecture exploring the Catholic nature of our institutions of higher learning. Drawing on his extensive scholarship regarding Catholic ecclesiology and the global impact of the Second Vatican Council, Faggioli will examine how the council’s vision for a "church in the modern world" can revitalize the specific mission of higher education. Join us for a stimulating discussion of the Catholic university today -- its mission and its purpose.
