WHAT 2022

Nationalism, Citizenship, and Identity

World History Association of Texas 2022 Conference

Hosted by St. Edward’s University, Austin, Texas

Held Virtually on February 20, 2022

This interdisciplinary conference on Nationalism, Citizenship, and Identity invites examinations of the emergence and development of nations and nationalism, competing understandings of citizenship, and the evolving identities that accompanied these changes. Other topics could include the affects of nationalism, citizenship, and identity on the evolution of political systems, economies, and cultures. As in the past, we also welcome papers on any topic related to World History including new research, concepts, and pedagogy.

The Conference Organizing Committee invites interested grades 4-12 teachers, college and university faculty, and independent scholars to submit paper proposals on any subject, period or area of world history. Additionally, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to submit proposals for concurrent Phi Alpha Theta-hosted panels. Conference organizers welcome proposals that connect world history teaching and research:

  • The political, social, economic, and cultural developments gave rise to and shaped nations and nationhood
  • How historians have interpreted nationalism and citizenship over time
  • Experiential projects to engage students in understanding the social justice issues related to nationalism, citizenship, and identities
  • The role of nationalism and citizenship in teaching and understanding world history
  • The affect of transnational connections on identities and/or policies

Proposals may include individual papers, collaborative projects or roundtable discussions of a topic or theme connected to world history. We encourage the submission of papers by promising undergraduates. We ask that the faculty sponsoring undergraduate papers submit the proposals for undergraduates.

Proposals for complete panels or roundtables of three or four presenters are encouraged. The panels and roundtables should be 1½ hours in length. Include your name, organization or institution, address, home and email address, working title of paper or presentation, and a brief description of the content.

PLEASE SUBMIT PROPOSALS NO LATER THAN 10 DECEMBER 2021. Send proposals and additional inquiries to Dr. Daniel Glenn, email: what.pat.seu@gmail.com.
