St. Edward's University Receives $80,000 from AT&T for CAMP Student Scholarships

AUSTIN, Texas (Jan 6.  2014) — AT&T has awarded St. Edward’s University two grants totaling $80,000 to support scholarships for College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) students during the 2013–2014 academic year. Sixteen St. Edward’s University CAMP students were designated ‘AT&T Scholars.’ Each will receive $5,000 and will be invited to meet AT&T Executives in the coming year.

The 2013 AT&T Scholars are:

• Yesenia Bustos (Pharr, Texas), a senior Global Studies major
• Francis Carrillo (Eagle Pass, Texas), a senior Social Work major
• Deyanira Castillo (Taylor, Texas), a junior Psychology major
• Kendra Castillo (Raymondville, Texas), a junior Communication major
• Kassandra Gonzalez (Weslaco, Texas), a sophomore Criminal Justice major
• Araceli Ramos Hernandez (Horn Lake, Miss.), a junior Kinesiology major
• Diamond Martinez (Alamo, Texas), a junior Criminal Justice major and Psychology minor
• Iovanka Meija (De Queen, Ark.), a junior Chemistry major
• Crystal Mendoza (Mercedes, Texas), a senior English Literature major
• Rogelio Ortiz (Pharr, Texas), a senior Mathematics major
• Jessica Peralta (Weslaco, Texas), a senior Education major
• Esmeralda Perez (Eagle Pass, Texas), a junior Special Education major and Kinesiology minor
• Jaime Rocha (Austin, Texas), a freshman Business Administration major
• Edileny Sanchez (Austin, Texas), a freshman Accounting major
• Erick Sanchez (Baytown, Texas), a senior Social Work major and Business Administration minor
• Mauricio Verdin (Weslaco, Texas), a junior Kinesiology major

Now entering its 41st year, the St. Edward’s CAMP is the nation’s longest continuously running program of its kind and is dedicated to serving the higher education needs of students from migrant and seasonal farmworker families. The St. Edward’s CAMP recruits and enrolls approximately 35 freshman migrant students annually. To qualify, high school students must meet the St. Edward’s admission requirements, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and demonstrate that migrant or seasonal farm work is their family’s primary source of income. Over 2,700 migrant students have accessed higher education through CAMP and St. Edward's University.   

Federal funding for CAMP is limited to support services for the freshman year. What separates the St. Edward’s CAMP from others across the nation is the university’s commitment to providing full tuition through graduation for CAMP students making satisfactory academic progress. St. Edward’s could not make this promise without support from generous donors like AT&T. Without scholarship support, CAMP students would have to leave school or delay graduation, leaving both St. Edward’s and the larger community deprived of their talents.
