Today U.S. News & World Report released its 2019 list of best colleges and universities in the nation, ranking St. Edward’s University the 12th best university in the Western Region, up from the 15th spot in 2018.
This marks the 16th consecutive year St. Edward’s has been recognized as one of America’s Best Colleges in the annual ranking. St. Edward’s is one of only four Texas universities to be named among the top 20 schools on the U.S. News Best Regional Universities–West list.
In addition to the university’s rise in the best regional university ranking, St. Edward’s moved up to 6th place on the list of Best Colleges for Veterans in the Western Region. For this distinction, U.S News looks at the enrollment of and benefits for veterans and active-duty service members that help make pursuing a college education more affordable.
The university also ranked 8th for Best Undergraduate Teaching in the Western Region. As part of its methodology for this list, U.S. News asks academic experts to identify schools where the faculty has an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Regional Universities list includes institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate programs as well as select master’s programs. The formula used by U.S. News to rank schools includes: peer assessment; freshman retention rate; graduation rate; percentage of classes under 20 and over 50 students; student-faculty ratio; SAT scores for incoming freshmen; percentage of freshmen who are in the top 25 percent of their high school class; and average alumni giving rate.
The U.S. News rankings are one of four recognitions received by the university so far this year. St. Edward’s ranked 11th in the 2018 Best Colleges in Texas list by College Consensus, and was named a 2019 Best College in the West by The Princeton Review. In addition, The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education 2019 College Rankings placed St. Edward’s in the top 50% of 1,000 schools on its list.
