Housing Accommodation/Exemption Based on Disability

Student Disability Services (SDS) engages in an interactive process with each student and reviews requests for accommodations on an individualized, case-by-case basis. Depending on the nature and functional limitations of a student’s documented disability, the student may be eligible to receive a housing accommodation. SDS and Residence Life work collaboratively in order to provide appropriate housing accommodations for students who are eligible for on-campus housing. Assignments are made directly by Residence Life and are dependent on room availability. Late requests may result in an accommodation not being available.

  • The priority deadline for the fall semester is April 1st.
  •  The priority deadline for the spring semester is December 1st.

Students are advised to visit the Residence Life website at http://think.stedwards.edu/residencelife/ for specific information regarding eligibility and deadlines for housing.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and its amendments requires that priority consideration be given to the specific methods requested by the student, it does not imply that a particular accommodation must be granted if it is deemed not reasonable and other suitable provisions are available. For example, single rooms are provided for individuals who have documented substantial needs and for whom living with a roommate is not viable.

Examples of Housing Accommodations:

  • ADA accessible room
  • Single room
  • Attached Bath (Private or Semi-Private)
  • Visual or audio alerts for deaf/hard of hearing or blind/low vision residents
  • Assistance Animal
  • Housing Exemption

Student Responsibilities

Housing Accommodation/Exemption Requests

NOTE: Prior to requesting an accommodation, students must be ELIGIBLE for on-campus housing by completing any applications required by Residence Life (e.g., Online Housing Application) as well as complying with all Residence Life deadlines (e.g., housing application deadline, room reservation fee deadline, etc.).

1. During the Online Housing Application process, students must indicate a need for a housing accommodation or exemption based on a disabling condition.

2. Once you have indicated a need, you will be directed to complete the Housing Accommodation Request Form

3. Students must provide documentation from an appropriately qualified professional that makes evident the current impact of the disability as it relates to the accommodation(s) requested. SDS strongly encourages providers to use the Disability Verification Form for Housing Accommodations.

NOTE: If you are unable to amend your Housing Application for the term you wish to be accommodated, please sds [at] stedwards.edu (subject: Housing%20Accommodation%20Information%20Request, body: Name%3A%0AID%3A%0AClassification%20(Freshman%2C%20Transfer%2C%20Returning%2C%20International)%3A%0AAre%20you%20currently%20living%20on%20campus%3A%0AIf%20so%2C%20what%20is%20your%20current%20campus%20housing%20assignment%3A%0A%0A) (c)sds [at] stedwards.edu (subject: Housing%20Accommodation%20Information%20Request, body: Please%20complete%20the%20following.%0A%0AName%3A%0A%0AID%3A%0A%0AClassification%20(Freshman%2C%20Transfer%2C%20Returning%2C%20International)%3A%0A%0AWhich%20semester%20are%20you%20interested%20in%20a%20housing%20accommodation%3A%0A%0AAre%20you%20currently%20living%20on%20campus%3A%0A%0AIf%20so%2C%20what%20is%20your%20current%20campus%20housing%20assignment%3A%0A%0AList%20other%20comments%20or%20questions%3A) (ontact SDS).

SDS Responsibilities

  • After the student has completed all Student Responsibilities listed above, SDS will contact the student to discuss the request. Students will receive an e-mail notification from SDS regarding the outcome of the request.
  • SDS will notify Residence Life regarding students who are approved for accommodations. Assignments will be made directly by Residence Life based on the approved accommodations. While consideration will be given to area preference, assignments will be based on the approved accommodation(s).
